Teachers are constantly being asked to stretch their classroom day to incorporate all of the demands placed on them by mandates and other requirements. A major goal at Health Wave from the early stages of development to current revisions and updates is to provide teachers with extensive resources making the delivery of high quality health education a rewarding teaching experience. A wide range of strategies is used to accommodate different teaching and learning styles. We provide a variety of methods; you choose the ones that work best for your students.

Simple Planning: The planning guide organizes each health unit for easy implementation. At a glance this page show you which blackline masters you will need, which resources correspond to the lessons, what content and skill you will be working on, as well as a correlation to the National Health Education Standards and character education traits.

Lesson Plans: The simple design of the lesson plan makes it easy for the classroom teacher to prepare and implement. Lessons include clearly stated goals and objectives and numerous classroom activities that make meaningful connections between health concepts and students’ life experiences. Areas of focus include building positive attitudes, building knowledge and skills, practicing and demonstrating healthy behavior and setting realistic health goals.

Teacher Resource Guide:designed to provide teachers with relevant, accurate and concise health information. The Teacher Resource Guide is updated regularly with the latest reports, statistics and information as well as national hotline numbers and websites.

Evaluation and Assessment: HPW includes several tools for evaluating student progress. Activity based measurements within each health component include children's ability to work well with others, organize and present information, and demonstrate health promoting skills. Progress reports are used to chart individual development in a particular topic area. Written evaluations are used at the end of every component to measure student knowledge, skills and attitudes. Pre and post evaluations are used to measure baseline knowledge, skills and attitudes from start to finish of the HPW program. 40 Developmental Assets: The Search Institute has developed a framework of 40 developmental assets. As outlined by the Search Institute these developmental assets are the basic life skills and attributes that are the critical building blocks for successful growth and development of young people. Character Traits: Character education is the effort to teach basic values and moral reasoning to primary and secondary school students. These values, called the “Six Pillars of Character,” are trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. These core values transcend political, religious, class and ethnic divisions. Throughout the HPW curriculum we teach these basic values as part of personal health, family health, violence prevention, community and environmental health. These character traits are identified on the planning pages of each section of the program.
